Bone Grafting

Bone grafting in Reston, VA: rebuilding lost jawbone, including sinus lifts, to prepare a site for dental implants, with a periodontist in the same office.

Why some implant sites need more bone

An implant needs enough healthy jawbone around it to stay secure. Where a tooth has been missing, or bone has been lost to gum disease, there may not be enough left to hold an implant firmly. A bone graft builds up jawbone strength and density, typically in preparation for dental implants. Your 3D Cone Beam CT scan maps the bone at each site, so we know before treatment begins whether grafting is part of your plan. When it is, Dr. Hazem Saqqal, who has extensive experience in advanced bone and soft tissue grafting, prepares the site in the same office.

What your imaging tells us

Digital and panoramic X-rays show detailed images of your teeth, roots and bone, and a 3D Cone Beam CT maps the bone where an implant would go. We go over those images with you on screen, so you can see why a site does or does not need grafting. Any preparatory procedure is discussed during the planning stage, before treatment begins.

The short answer

Bone grafting is a procedure that rebuilds jawbone where it has been lost, adding the strength and density a dental implant needs to stay secure. Imaging such as a 3D Cone Beam CT maps the bone at each site, and a graft or a sinus lift, which adds bone to the upper jaw near the molars and premolars, is placed where the scan shows a shortfall. It is most often done before implant placement, so the new tooth has a firm foundation in the jaw.

Bone grafting FAQ

What is a bone graft?
A bone graft rebuilds jawbone where it has been lost, adding strength and density. It is most often done to prepare a site for a dental implant. Bone grafting is part of the periodontal care Dr. Hazem Saqqal provides in our office. Whether you need one is decided from your imaging during planning.
When would I need a bone graft?
You may need a bone graft if you are getting implants and your jaw needs to be stronger to support them. This can happen where bone has been lost around a missing tooth or to gum disease. Your 3D scan measures the bone at each implant site, which tells us whether grafting is needed. Not every implant patient needs one.
What is a sinus lift?
A sinus lift adds bone to the upper jaw near the molars and premolars. It creates space between the jaw and the sinuses so implants can be placed there. Like a bone graft, it is a preparatory procedure for implant treatment. Your imaging shows whether your upper jaw needs one.
Who performs bone grafting?
Bone grafting is performed by Dr. Hazem Saqqal, DDS, MS, a Board-Certified Periodontist. He completed specialized training in Periodontics at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine and has extensive experience in advanced bone and soft tissue grafting. He works in the same office as Dr. Kiumars Karbasi, who plans and completes your implant restoration. Your records are shared, so there is no outside referral to arrange.
Is bone grafting uncomfortable?
Grafting is done with the treatment area numbed, and our team works to make the experience as smooth and comfortable as possible. If you feel nervous, or the appointment will be a long one, ask us about sedation. You can also relax with pillows, blankets and headphones during your visit. We explain each step before we begin.
Does a bone graft add to the cost of implant treatment?
Yes, a bone graft is a separate procedure, so it is part of your treatment cost when your plan needs one. The graft is included when we go over cost with you during planning, before any treatment starts. Payment plans and treatment loans can spread the cost of a larger implant case. Ask at your consultation for the figures behind your full plan.
